DLR SportsAbility Day 2024 – An information event promoting physical activities available in DLR and surrounding areas, including a chance to try inclusive sports and activities in the County for people with a disability, their families, disability services and activity providers.
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership in collaboration with the SportsAbility Forum, are delighted to host a SportsAbility Information Day on the 26th May in Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua, Ballyogan Road from 3-5pm. This free event welcomes people with a disability, their families, disability services and anyone with an interest in inclusive sports to attend and learn about accessible sport and physical activity opportunities for all abilities in an informal fun environment.
There will be stands and representatives from a range of local physical activity providers including local sports clubs, National Governing Bodies and other sporting organisations. As part of this free event, attendees can participate in ‘come & try’ sessions in a range of different sports on the day, including archery, rugby, lawn bowls, rowing, tennis, GAA & table cricket to name just a few. There will also be some spot prizes of One4All vouchers given out on the day.
An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Denis O’Callaghan said, ‘I welcome the return of this event after covid, it’s a chance for inclusive clubs in the County to showcase their great work directly to those that need the information and to help continue to grow our ‘activities for all’ ethos in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown.’
Gwen O’Looney, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership commented ‘This is a perfect opportunity for people with a disability and other attendees to meet local clubs and groups face to face to help them decide if that activity is a fit for them and suits their needs. It’s essentially a one stop shop to view the range of different clubs available and a chance to have a go of some fun sports on the day”.
SportsAbility is one of the initiatives rolled out by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership under its Sports Inclusion Disability Programme, funded by Sport Ireland and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. The focus of this programme is to support and increase opportunities for people with a disability in this County to participate in sport and physical activity. Working with local partners such as clubs, community groups, schools, disability services, National Governing Bodies and sports organisations, we provide a range of supports and training opportunities to promote participation and inclusion of all abilities.
