Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Celebrates European Week of Sport 2026

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership and Active Cities Dublin, together with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, proudly celebrated European Week of Sport 2026 with a diverse programme of activities, courses and community events designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get active, have fun and embrace healthy lifestyles.

European Week of Sport is an initiative promoting participation in sport and physical activity running from 23rd-30th September. This year’s celebrations were particularly significant as Ireland held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union during September, highlighting the importance of active and healthy communities across Europe.

Throughout the week, people from across the county enjoyed a variety of activities including Discover Padel Tennis for Men in Shankill Tennis Club, Lunchtime Yoga and Tai Chi in the beautiful surroundings of the Marlay Park Stretch Tent, alongside high-energy sessions such as Pound Fitness, school activities and the ever-popular Coppers: The Workout. The programme also recognised that wellbeing extends beyond physical activity, with Sports First Aid, Neurodiversity & Disability Awareness and Safeguarding workshops helping to build healthier and more inclusive communities.

The celebrations culminated in the flagship #BeActive Night at Explorium on Saturday 26th September. Bringing together over 400 participants from across the county, the event offered an evening of fun, fitness, discovery and social connection while showcasing the many ways people can enjoy being active.

The event was attended by An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Councillor Barry Saul, who praised the success of the initiative, stating:

“European Week of Sport has once again demonstrated the power of physical activity to bring people together, improve wellbeing and strengthen our communities. It is fantastic to see such a wide range of opportunities available across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can get involved and experience the many benefits of being active.”

Joining Councillor Saul on the night were Mary Van Lieshout, Director of Participation, Research and Ethics at Sport Ireland who provided funding to make this event happen and Jenae Kaiser of Explorium who opened the whole facility for this community evening.

Shane Mc Ardle, Coordinator of DLR Sports Partnership, reflected on the strong partnerships that help make initiatives such as this possible, stating:

“European Week of Sport once again highlighted the positive impact that sport and physical activity can have on health, wellbeing and community connection, reinforcing our commitment to work together to create opportunities for everyone to be active throughout the year.”

Through the combined efforts of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership, Active Cities Dublin, Sport Ireland and Explorium, the event delivered a fun, inclusive and energetic experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
