DLR Sports Partnership and the beaches section of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council are delighted to announce the opening of new outdoor showers at the Forty Foot bathing area to facilitate the ever-increasing number of people that enjoy a sea swim at this location. Working with the Beaches Section, DLR Sports Partnership secured a grant of €20,000 in the recent Healthy Ireland ‘Outdoor Swimming Infrastructure Fund’ that was administered by Sport Ireland on behalf of the Department of Health. This fund sets out to strengthen and underpin the National Swimming Strategy with the objective of increasing participation in swimming.
Cllr. Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said: “Sea swimming is an integral part of life in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. Even those who don’t or can’t swim themselves enjoy watching other brave souls enter the water for a rejuvenating dip. There were no showers in this location, so the upgraded facility will be a great addition to the Forty Foot”.
This sea swimming facility is for everyone to enjoy, from visiting weekenders to long-standing locals and clubs. This investment and works will facilitate a more convenient and enjoyable experience for the tens of thousands of users each year. Swimming at the Forty Foot dates back to the 19th century with all ages and swimming abilities enjoying the benefits of the open water and beautiful scenery. To support this, the existing but unused Forty Foot Hut has now been fully renovated to facilitate convenient outdoor showers while maintaining the important architectural features of the local area.
