DailyMile Logo NoStrap RGB30 primary schools all across Dun Laoghaire Rathdown are currently participating in 'The Daily Mile' health initiative which will improve the physical, emotional and social health and wellbeing of their pupils – regardless of age or personal circumstances. In 2012 Elaine Wyllie, Headteacher of a large Scottish primary school, realised that her pupils, like many others, were unfit. She introduced the concept of every class doing 15 minutes of a walk, jog or run daily and found the results hugely beneficial. The Daily mile initiative was born and now has become so popular that hundreds of schools in the UK participate in the programme and is also in countries such as Belgium, Holland, the US and now Ireland.

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership, have invited schools to participate in this profoundly simple but effective concept, which any primary school can implement. Its impact can be transformational- improving not only the children’s’ fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.

An impressive 30 schools have come on board to date to take part in the Challange.

The Daily Mile is successful because it is simple and free:

  • It takes place over just 15 minutes, with children averaging a mile each day.
  • Children run outside in the fresh air – and the weather is a benefit, not a barrier.
  • There’s no set up, tidy up, or equipment required.
  • Children run in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.
  • It’s social, non-competitive and fun.
  • It’s fully inclusive; every child succeeds, whatever their circumstances, age or ability.

Shane McArdle, Coordinator with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership stated  “It's fantastic to see so many local schools are taking part in the Challange again this year. We have added a new element, 'The Run Around Europe' Challange. Pupils run, roll or walk to a city in Europe, learning geography, languge and history along the way, all the while improving their own wellbeing.'

Expressions of interest by schools in “The Daily Mile” are still being accepted and can be lodged by contacting Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership at 01-2719502 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
